Mensa Canada Automates Securing Members-Only Website Features
Membee’s Member Login plugin eliminates all of the manual work of managing who does and does not have access to “members only” content and features on a WordPress-based site. Ben, the National Webmaster from Mensa Canada, shares how Membee’s WordPress Login Plugin has helped Mensa Canada get the best of both worlds between WordPress and Membee as their membership management system.
About Mensa Canada
Mensa, also known as the International High-IQ Society is an organization for people who score in the top 2% in intelligence tests.
Mensa was founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and by Dr Lance Ware, a scientist and lawyer. They had the idea of forming a society for bright people, the only qualification for membership being a high IQ. The original aims were to create a society that is non-political and free from all racial or religious distinctions. The word “Mensa” is simply Latin for “table”, the idea being we are a round-table society where all members regardless of age, sex, race, beliefs or income are considered equals.
The Mensa Canada Society welcomes people from every walk of life whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population. The objective of membership is to enjoy each other’s company and to participate in a wide range of social and cultural activities.
How Membee Eliminates The Manual Work For Member Login
It’s quite simple – here’s a recap! Membee fully automates the member login during new member sign up and revokes the login when a member doesn’t renew. It’s time to stop managing member login manually and let Membee do the work for you, just like Mensa Canada!
Mensa Canada Before Membee
Before Mensa Canada used Membee to secure their members-only resources, they used the user database built into WordPress. The user database is a great resource to utilize if you have one website and a small membership database, but not the best when your organization grows! It’s high maintenance and requires constant upkeep manually. Mensa Canada has over 2000 members – could you image manually updating each member login?!

Mensa Canada’s multi-site installation would sync all member records, but maintaining the information was more of a chore than it needed to be, but luckily, Membee helped them keep member records and site access segregated, yet smoothly integrated.
“We leverage the user database in our WordPress sites. It was quite a bit of chore maintaining it, especially when we have a multi-site installation. Having a multi-site installation means that we need to sync the member records between each of the sites. Membee allows us to segregate the responsibilities of Member record maintenance from site maintenance.”

What Type of Resources Are Secured?
The type of resources that are secured varies between different associations. Mensa Canada’s secured resources are key to their membership. Their most accessed secured resource, the newsletter, can only be distributed and viewed by members. Membee’s secured login ensures that this remains in the hands of their members only.
When visiting Mensa’s site, all the information under the “Members Area” is secured by Membee’s login as seen below.

These are the type of resources that Mensa keeps exclusive to members only:
- Upcoming Events
- Publication Documents
- Newsletters
- Member directory
- Interest Groups
- Contact information for National and Local leaders
- By-Laws & Constitution
“We (Mensa) offer many services to our members and they are restricted to members only for many reasons. For example, communication to and between Mensa members are important. For that we produce newsletters and we want to restrict the distribution/access of these newsletters to members only. We control the access through the security mechanism provided by Membee. The most accessed resources are the newsletters and the member directory. We also secured the contact info of the national and local leaders. While we encourage members to contact leaders, we want to limit this info from the general public. We also store by-laws, the constitution of Mensa here too.”

Mensa Canada Wants You To Know….
After using Membee’s login plugin extensively and effectively, Ben shares how easy the implementation was and what organizations should consider when exploring the login plugin feature. He even provides details about how Membee’s Login Plugin can improve and we’re grateful to hear the feedback!
“Implementing the secure login feature in Membee is simple enough. When implementing, think about your user’s experience as you integrate Membee to your site. Think about things like, how easy it is for your members to self-help if they encounter login issues, etc. The Membee login plugin was easy to implement and I particularly like the ability to control access thru the one plugin on our various sites (national and multiple local ones). One thing we would like to see is further improvements to the plugin so that it provides tighter integration (i.e. the ability to customize error messaging, look and feel, etc).”
